Advertisement calls of Bolivian species of Scinax (Amphibia, Anura, Hylidae) Naturalis
Riva, Ignacio de la; Márquez, Rafael; Bosch, Jaime.
The advertisement calls of eight Bolivian species of Scinax are described including information on the calling behaviour of each species. A characteristic audiospectrogram and oscillogram are presented for each species, as well as numerical information about the spectral and temporal features of the calls. Two phenograms based on the characteristics of the mating calls are constructed, the first one using a traditional multivariate technique (UPGMA) and the second one using audiospectrogram correlation, a new technique that allows holistic comparisons of single vocalizations.

Atividade reprodutiva de Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann) (Anura, Hylidae) na Floresta Atlântica, sudeste do Brasil Zoologia
Bastos,Rogério P; Haddad,Célio F. B.
The breeding activity of Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann, 1964) was observed in a temporary pond, in the municipality of Ribeirão Branco, in the Southern São Paulo State from February 1993 to January 1994 and November 1994 to February 1995. The reproductive season extended from September to February. Females were larger and heavier (after oviposition) than males. In the choras, the spatial distribution tended towards uniformity. The number of males and females in the chorus was positively correlated. However there was no correlation between the number of males and the estimation of the operational sex ratios. On average there were seven males for each female present in the chorus. The males were apparently selected by females.

Biochemical characterization and cytotoxic effect of the skin secretion from the red-spotted Argentina frog Argenteohyla siemersi (Anura: Hylidae) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Fusco,Luciano S.; Cajade,Rodrigo; Piñeiro,Jose M.; Torres,Ana M.; Silva,Igor R. F. da; Hyslop,Stephen; Leiva,Laura C.; Pimenta,Daniel C.; Bustillo,Soledad.
Abstract Background: Argenteohyla siemersi (red-spotted Argentina frog) is a casque-headed tree frog species belonging to the Hylidae family. This species has a complex combination of anti-predator defense mechanisms that include a highly lethal skin secretion. However, biochemical composition and biological effects of this secretion have not yet been studied. Methods: The A. siemersi skin secretion samples were analyzed by mass spectrometry and chromatographic analysis (MALDI-TOF/MS, RP-HPLC and GC-MS). Proteins were also studied by SDS-PAGE. Among the biological activities evaluated, several enzymatic activities (hemolytic, phospholipase A2, clotting, proteolytic and amidolytic) were assessed. Furthermore, the cytotoxic activity (cytolysis and...

Effect of traffic noise on Scinax nasicus advertisement call (Amphibia, Anura) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Leon,Evelina; Peltzer,Paola M.; Lorenzon,Rodrigo; Lajmanovich,Rafael C.; Beltzer,Adolfo H..
ABSTRACT Increased anthropogenic-made sounds such as traffic noises contribute to acoustic pollution, which produces deleterious effect on song-vertebrates. We compared the advertisement call of Scinax nasicus (Cope, 1862) males in natural (as a reference or control, Site A) and Sites affected by traffic noises (Site B). Call structure was recorded and it was amplified in sonograms (software Raven Pro 1.5). Seven variables were measured on its advertisement call: duration (s), number of notes, number of pulses per note, maximum and minimum frequency (kHz), dominant frequency (kHz) and amplitude (dB). In addition, at each Site the background noise (the fundamental frequency, F0 and amplitude, dB) was measured. The amplitude of background noise reached...

Feeding habits of six anuran (Amphibia: Anura) species in a rainforest fragment in Northeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Santos,Ednilza M.; Almeida,Argus V.; Vasconcelos,Simão D..
Although Brazil encompasses one of the most abundant anuran faunas in the world, quantitative information on anuran ecology and diet are limited, especially in the Northeastern region. We analyzed the diet of six species: Hyla albomarginata, Hyla cf. branneri, Hyla minuta, Phyllomedusa aff. hypochondrialis (Hylidae), Leptodactylus natalensis, and Physalaemus cuvieri (Leptodactylidae) in a temporary pond in a rainforest remnant in Pernambuco, between 1999-2000. We analyzed diet composition, degree of food preference, and seasonal variations in diet. Leptodactylus natalensis and P. cuvieri showed higher diet diversity, whereas H. minuta consumed fewer food items. Insecta, Arachnida, and plants were preferential items for most species. Acari were consumed by...

Natural history and distribution of Agalychnis craspedopus (Funkhouser, 1957) (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Cadle, J.E..
Aspects of reproductive behaviour, calls, clutch sizes, and larval morphology are described for Agalychnis craspedopus (Funkhouser, 1957). New distributional records extend the range of this species to southern Amazonian Peru. In most respects reproductive behaviour of A. craspedopus is similar to that of other phyllomedusine frogs. In southern Peru clutches were suspended above water-filled hollow cavities in logs, but in Ecuador tadpoles were found in a pool on the ground with no directlyoverhanging vegetation. Agalychnis craspedopus lays small clutches (mean = 17 eggs) with large eggs. Breeding possibly takes place throughout some years in southern Peru, but this undoubtedly varies depending on rainfall. Some aspects of reproductive biology, and tadpole...

Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam : VI. Resurrection of Hyla ornatissima Noble (Amphibia, Hylidae) and remarks on related species of green tree frogs from the Guiana area Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
In the present paper Hyla ornatissima Noble is removed from the synonymy of Hyla granosa Boulenger, and resurrected as a separate species on the basis of morphological, ecological and acoustical differences. Another relative of this group occurring in Guiana is Hyla sibleszi Rivero. Because of its superficial resemblance with these frogs Hyla punctata (Schneider), of another species-group, is also treated. All four species are extensively described, data on life history and distribution are given. H. sibleszi, so far only known from the type material and some associated specimens, is reported from several new localities in Venezuela and Guyana. It is suggested that the function of the intricate dorsal pattern of H. ornatissima serves to protect the animal...

Predation on young treefrog (Osteocephalus taurinus) by arthropods (Insecta, Mantodea and Arachnida, Araneae) in Central Brazil Biota Neotropica
Costa-Pereira,Raul; Martins,Fernando Ibanez; Sczesny-Moraes,Eurico Antonio; Brescovit,Antonio.
Praying mantis and spider species are common food items in the diet of several anuran species. Nevertheless, in this study we report the predation of young treefrogs Osteocephalus taurinus by two spider species, a Pisauridae and a Trechaleidae (Neoctenus sp.) and by the praying mantis Eumusonia sp. in Mato Grosso, Central Brazil. The great abundance of this treefrog in the region, combined with its small body size during the juvenil stage, favor its predation by generalists predators. Indeed, more studies are needed to quantify the real influence of invertebrate predators on anuran populations.

Relacionamento entre anfíbios anuros e bromélias da restinga de Regência, Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Schineider,José Alberto P.; Teixeira,Rogério L..
Some anuran amphibians use the bromeliads during the entire life cycle and others only as diurnal shelter. At the sandy coastal plain of Linhares, State of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil, 676 bromeliads were examined, of which 303 of Aechmea blanchetiana (Baker) L. B. Smith., 1955, 287 of Aechmea nudicaulis (L.) Griseb., 1864, and 86 of Vrisea procera (Mart. Ex Schult. f.) Wittm, 1891. The morphometric and physical-chemical analysis of different bromeliads evidenced variations among plants. During the period sampled, six anuran species were found inside the plant axils. The hylid frog Phyllodytes luteolus (Wied, 1824) was the most abundant species (260 specimens). Its abundance was higher in the epiphyte bromeliad Vrisea procera. Phyllodytes luteolus...

Resurrection of Hyla wavrini Parker (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae), a gladiator frog from northern South America Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
During field work in Venezuela and Brazil a difference in call was noticed between specimens of large hylids of the Hyla boans-group. Based on this and on morphological differences, it was concluded that Hyla wavrini Parker, 1936, up till now considered a synonym of Hyla boans (Linnaeus, 1758), should be considered a valid species, of which Hyla miranda-ribeiri Melin, 1941 is a synonym.
